Good to know about tax in Denmark
Tax card
Your tax card (skattekort) is issued by the Danish Tax Agency. It ensures that your employer withholds tax on the right basis.
Preliminary income assessment
The forskudsopgørelse is a budget of your income and deductions for the year. Check it when you change job, working hours or address – it is the best way to avoid back tax (restskat).
Deductions worth checking
The travel deduction can also cover journeys to and from Poland. If your family lives in Poland, you may be entitled to a deduction for maintaining two households.
Tax residence
Your home, family and working days determine where you are liable to tax. Leaving Denmark and changing your address does not always end your full tax liability.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a tax card when I start a job in Denmark?
Yes. Your tax card is issued by the Danish Tax Agency, and your employer withholds tax based on it. Have your employment contract, start date and details of your home in Denmark and Poland ready.
When should I change my preliminary income assessment?
Whenever something changes: a new job, a new salary, new working hours or a new address. An updated forskudsopgørelse reduces the risk of back tax when the year is over.
Will I pay tax twice if I have income in both countries?
You should not. The rules in both countries and the double tax treaty decide which country may tax the income. This requires your returns in Denmark and Poland to match.
Can I get a travel deduction if I commute from Poland?
You may. The Danish travel deduction can also cover trips home to Poland – by car, ferry or plane. Special rules apply, so it is worth having it calculated precisely.
Does my Danish tax liability end when I move back to Poland?
Not always. Leaving Denmark and changing your address does not always end your full tax liability. It depends, among other things, on whether you still have a home available in Denmark.
