Tax refund from Denmark: when and how you get the money
When overpaid tax is refunded, how the money can reach a Polish bank account, and which deductions you should check yourself.
When will you get your tax refund from Denmark?
If the tax withheld during the year was higher than your final tax, your tax assessment notice (årsopgørelse) shows an amount to be refunded. The notice for 2025 was available in the self-service system TastSelv on 23 March 2026, and the Danish Tax Agency (Skattestyrelsen) began refunding overpaid tax on 24 April 2026.
You do not need to apply, as the refund is paid automatically to your NemKonto. If you have to file an extended tax return (udvidet selvangivelse), for example because you have income from Poland, your assessment is only calculated once you have entered your information. The deadline for the extended tax return for 2025 was 1 July 2026.
The refund can take longer if the amount is large, if the Tax Agency needs more information, or if you or your spouse owe money to Danish public authorities. In the last case, the overpaid tax may be used to reduce the debt.
Can the refund be paid into a Polish bank account?
Yes. A non-Danish bank account can be registered as your NemKonto, the account Danish public authorities pay money into. You can do this yourself at nemkonto.dk, or ask the Danish Tax Agency to register it, which according to the agency takes about 4 months.
If you ask the agency, send your CPR number, the account's IBAN and SWIFT/BIC, a copy of your passport and an official document showing your current address. An amount of DKK 200 or less that cannot be paid out lapses 3 months after the failed attempt.
Which deductions should you check yourself?
Many deductions are not included automatically. This applies in particular to the transport deduction (kørselsfradrag), the travel deduction (rejsefradrag) and the deduction for double housekeeping (dobbelt husførelse), which you must enter yourself. A missing deduction means you have paid more tax than necessary.
Also check that the salary from each employer matches your payslips, and that only one employer at a time has used your primary tax card (hovedkort). Income from Poland must be reported, and you need documentation of tax paid in Poland if you want it taken into account in Denmark.
Can you get tax back for previous years?
You can usually change your tax assessment notices for the last three years yourself in TastSelv. The deadline for 2023 is 1 May 2027, for 2024 it is 1 May 2028, and for 2025 it is 1 May 2029.
Some changes are checked, and the Tax Agency will then ask for an explanation and documentation. Keep your payslips, tickets, receipts and documents relating to your homes in both countries.
Watch out for fake tax refund messages
The Danish Tax Agency pays refunds automatically, never states specific amounts in emails or text messages and never asks for your bank or card details. If you receive a refund message with a link, log on to TastSelv yourself instead.
You do not need an intermediary to receive the refund itself. Help can make sense if you are unsure about deductions or about how to report income and tax from Poland.
